We Made it!

We made it safely to our village. It took us two days because the plane could not land due to strong winds. We are safe, we lost our bags temporarily I hope.

Thanks for praying :]

We'll definitely be praying your bags show up. As much as we hope you get your shaving cream and extra shorts, we know how critical the preemie formula you were packing is!

Hi!

I think I found your blog some time ago though a search in Google, I had bookmarked it. My name is Minerva and I'm compelled by the situation in Haiti, I would like to help if possible, but I'm sort of skeptical about big organizations that I've found online since I wonder just how much is actually reaching the people that really need the help. Anyway I guess I just wanted to know if I could send something, let me know any practical idea, since you're there you obviously know what is needed and what the best procedure for helping would be, I am in Puerto Rico right now so relatively close to Haiti for shipping matters.

My email is minerva(dot)rivero(at)gmail(dot)com.

Thanks

Hello Dustin

I've just found your blog whilst doing a Google search for 'bunk bed + Haiti' and have been reading a lot of it. It sounds like you're doing masses of great work, all of you and your optimism is really infectious! Can I ask you for some advice? I'm trying to find a cheap source of bunk beds in Haiti for my godson's three young brothers (they need two sets of bunk beds so Mum can also sleep on a bed when she does the weekly trip to market in town. They all sleep on a straw mat on the mud floor of their hut in the countryside. I think they'll learn better if they actually have a bed to sleep on!). A church here in England has raised the money for them to go to high school for a year - as you know, a fantastic opportunity - and I'm hoping to raise money each successive year from other churches or schools. But, they can't go unless they have somewhere to live in the nearest town with a highschool. I'm trying to raise the money for their elder brother (who's a bricklayer - migrant worker) to build them a two-roomed concrete hut in the town and we need to find a source of bunk beds. Of course, I could buy them in the US and ship them over but that's a poor idea as a)it's not very environmentally friendly to ship stuff unnecessarily b) it's not cheap and c) importing deprives local industry of income. Looking on the web, Haiti is apparently full of bunk beds...a lot of them underneath the prison population! So you must be able to buy them somewhere! Any ideas where I could search would be great. Nearest big cities (well, nearly cities) are Hinche and Port-au-Prince. Your work, relationships and the Haitians you have named in your blog are in my prayers. I've only worked in Haiti for a month, 15 years ago, but I remember well just how hard it is to achieve anything at all in any reasonable timeframe! God seems to be paying good attention to what you are doing! May he bless you all and your work. Alison alison.kempster@gmail.com
